2007 Queensland Youth Conference

Summary of the 2007 Queensland Youth Conference

The 2007 Queensland Youth Conference was held in Brisbane from 5 to 7 September 2007.

The Office for Youth at the Department of the Communities hosted the conference which attracted 320 delegates over the two day conference.

Of the 320 delegates, 165 were youth sector workers, and 153 were young people. 78 of the delegates were from outside the South East Queensland region and were given support to attend through Office for Youth subsidies. Many of the people registered were both young people and youth worker representatives. Fourteen young people frrom Far North Queensland and the Torres Strait Islands attended.

The Office for Youth offered subsidies for young people under the age of 25 years who lived outside the South East Queensland corner. The subsidies covered travel and accommodation for young people that were not in full time employment and travel for young people who were full time employed. The Office for Youth also provided subsidised accommodation for youth workers or guardians who were supporting young people to attend. A total of 78 delegates were given subsidised attendance for the Queensland Youth Conference.

To ensure the conference was relevant to stakeholders a state-wide survey was conducted. This helped outline the direction of the conference for 2007. Over 102 surveys were returned which guided the selection of conference presentations.

The conference included 32 presentations, 15 of which were facilitated by young people. An exciting line up of key guest speakers included:

  • Tania Major, 2007 Young Australian of the Year
  • Jess Wellard, 2006 Queensland Young Achiever of the Year
  • Lars Olsen, the 2007 Suncorp Young Queenslander of the Year and founder of Forget-Me-Not Childrens Home in Kathmandu - also provided inspiration.

Sessions which featured young speakers sharing their stories on topics such as youth leadership, youth homelessness, young parents, and youth bullying recorded extremely high attendances. Office for Youth also arranged for a high degree of Indigenous presentations to help inform workers and encourage best practice frameworks.
