About Local Youth Council & LGAQ

What is a local youth council?

Local youth councils are made up of young people from a diverse range of backgrounds who are eager to participate in civic life. Local youth councils give young people a voice in their local government and provide a forum for councils to seek the input and advice of young people. They also provide an opportunity for young people to learn about local government.

What is the Local Government Association of Queensland?

The Local Government Association of Queensland is an organisation that works to strengthen the ability and performance of local government to better serve the community.

What work does LGAQ do with young people?

The Local Government Association of Queensland, in partnership with the State Government, actively encourages young people to contribute, participate, and engage in the development and implementation of policy, programs, opportunities, and services that directly impact upon young people and their communities.

LGAQ also works with local government to implement and expand opportunities for young people to actively or more fully participate in their local communities.

What work does LGAQ do with local youth councils?

One of the ways that the LGAQ works with communities and young people is through local youth councils.

LGAQ youth officers:

  • provide a link between local councils and young people who wish to participate in the development of their communities
  • liaise with local council youth officers, or officers appointed to act in that capacity, to establish councils and set up LYC responsibilities and processes
  • support local councils to act on issues specifically relevant to their communities
  • assist local council to develop specific policy within a youth policies framework, and any supporting actions or strategies.
