Engaging Government

Programs for young people to engage with Queensland Government

When governments and individuals communicate effectively with each other, the result is informed and vibrant dialogue within the community and the opportunity for the public to influence government decision making.

The Queensland Youth Charter spells out the Queensland Government's commitment to providing young people (aged 15-25 years) with opportunities to have their say.

The Engaging Government section of Generate plays host to a range of opportunities for young people to participate in the decision-making processes of government. This includes several eDemocracy programs specifically for young people, where you can provide feedback and have input from the comfort of your own keyboard.

Engaging Government consists of the following sections:

Consult & Influence

Links to online consultations, surveys, polls, petitions, and other web sites with more information about other government decision-making tools. You can learn about the outcomes of previous public consultations, learn more about eDemocracy in Queensland, and access other consultation resources. Visit Consult & Influence now.

Online meetings

For over 4 years Generate has hosted online meetings between young Queenslanders and Queensland Government Ministers in a real-time chat room, and this year plans to upgrade the service. Find out more in Online Meetings.

Queensland youth council

The Queensland Youth Council is a group of 20 young people from accross Queensland that provide advice to the Minister responsible for Youth on the policies, programs and services that impact on the lives of young people in Queensland. More information is in the Queensland Youth Council section.

Boards and committees

Government boards and committees play an important role in government decision-making. The Office for Youth runs an initiative called 'Get on board' to increase the number of young people (aged 18 to 25) on these government decision-making bodies. Find out how you can Get on Board too.

Community cabinet

Community Cabinet is a meeting between Cabinet Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and senior public servants to listen to the concerns of anyone in the community who wants to attend, including young people. Visit community cabinet for more.

YMCA youth parliament

YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament brings together 89 young people from across Queensland (aged between 15 and 25) to discuss the real issues that matter to them. The program includes a week-long camp in Brisbane at the end of June each year. During the camp, the youth members debate their Youth Bills in Parliament House. Visit our YMCA youth parliament section.
