Queensland Youth Council

How does Queensland Youth Council work?

Meetings

The council meets twice per year for a two-day meeting. The Minister will normally attend for a short time to put issues relating to policies, programs, and services that impact on the lives of young people to the council for advice.  The council members will discuss the issues, seek feedback from their region and other sources, and provide advice back to the Minister.

Roles and responsibilities

Each young member of the council is expected to be active in the region that they live in, and to represent the issues relevant to young people in their region.

Council members play a key role in developing and strengthening partnerships between:

  • young people
  • the youth sector
  • government
  • the broader community.

This includes working with their Department of Communities' regional office to develop processes for engaging as many young people across Queensland as possible. Through these networks, council members advise the Minister on current and emerging issues and concerns of importance to young people across Queensland.

Structure

The Queensland Youth Council is made up of 20 young members selected from a range of backgrounds and life experiences, as well as a Department of Communities representative from the Office for Youth. Members hold the positions of Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson.

Each member brings knowledge and expertise regarding young people's issues in their region as well as their own unique perspectives. Collectively the council reflects a range of perspectives of young people across Queensland.
